"Then Mary said, 'Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word'" Luke 1:38.
To me, these are some of the most remarkable words in Scripture. Mary had just been told something quite amazing -- -- something no one before her had ever been told.
The angel Gabriel said to Mary that the child who would be born to her -- -- perfectly, immaculately -- -- This "Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God." What a tremendous proclamation!
What strikes me is that she had nothing to which she could liken this experience. She had just been told that her cousin Elizabeth who had been barren all of her life and was now in her 60s, had conceived a child in her old age "and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible."
I would like to take these words personally this month. What seemingly impossible thing are you believing God for? Is it something that God has promised you in His Word? Healing? Restoration of family, job, finances, or ministry? A goal or dream you want to reach?
HEY! BEHOLD! -- what about Mary?
The fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is Hey.
In the ancient Hebrew language the word Hey means "to behold." Symbolically, a picture of a man with his hands lifted up, as well as a picture of an open window have both been used in ancient symbols to signify this letter.
In Dr. Frank Seekins' book, Hebrew Word Pictures <http://praisemoves.com/combo.htm>, he writes, "The letter Hey means behold. The concept of behold is that you have been shown something that is distinct and clear. What you behold may even answer your question."
Mary said to the angel Gabriel that she was a servant of the Lord. "Behold the maidservant of the Lord." If, according to the ancient Hebrew, what we behold before us provides the answer or explains the situation, she may have been saying that her position as "the maidservant of the Lord" was a determining factor in what would most likely happen.
Mary believed.
She chose to believe. She could have chosen to doubt. Mary, like all of us, could exercise free will. She chose to act upon the words spoken to her through God's messenger by speaking her agreement with what he said BECAUSE she saw herself as God's servant.
Her next statement was: "Let it be to me according to your word." She was a servant of God. She believed His Word. BEHOLD! -- her position as God's servant may have meant to her that she considered it inevitable that what would happen to her would be according to the Word of God proclaimed to her by God's messenger.
HEY! BEHOLD! -- what about YOU?
BEHOLD!
The Word of God has been spoken to you! What is your response? Do you "hem and haw," procrastinate and come up with all sorts of reasons why something God has promised you will not happen or does not apply to you? What will you say?
BEHOLD!
Here is Mary, the woman God chose to carry His precious Seed (Gal. 3:16) -- -- the Word of God Himself (John 1:1, 14) -- -- Jesus. She had nothing upon which to base her faith other than the fact that she saw herself as God's servant, and therefore believed that what God's angel said was worthy of her agreement ("let it be to me").
Her faith may have also involved the knowledge that as a servant of the most high God, anything less than the truth of God's word coming to pass in her life was not acceptable.
Whose Servant Are YOU?
At Christmas over the years we've heard many messages about the birth of Jesus in our own hearts -- and will there be "room at the inn" within your heart and life. I would like to focus on the willingness of God's servant to believe -- -- and receive.
I invite you to pray along the lines of Mary's prayer today:
"Behold, Lord! I am your servant. I am your child. I choose to set my eyes on You and your Word throughout 2010. I will not be moved by what I see or by what I feel. I will not be moved by circumstances, by what the news might say, or by what people might say -- -- if those words are contrary to what You have told me in Your Word.
"Behold the servant of the Lord! Dear Father God, Lord Jesus, and precious Holy Spirit -- -- let it be to me, let it be to my family, let it be to my church family and the body of Christ -- -- let it be according to Your Word!"
