Allergies

Principle for Optimum Health: Do not ignore symptoms…don't be presumptuous regarding your health. If you are experiencing symptoms of an injury or illness; have been diagnosed with a disease process or if you are pregnant, nursing or desiring to become pregnant; you should consult with the healthcare provider of your choice before embarking upon any new health regimen.

Special note regarding severe allergic response known as Anaphylaxis:

Anaphylaxis is the most severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include: flushing of the face; tingling of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet; light-headedness and chest-tightness. If not treated, these can progress into seizures, cardiac arrhythmia, shock and respiratory distress. Anaphylaxis can result in death. Ingested or inhaled allergen such as: airborne allergen; food; latex; insect sting and drug allergies can result in anaphylaxis. If you suspect you or another is experiencing an anaphylaxic reaction, seek medical attention immediately.

It is estimated that more than 80 million Americans suffer from allergies. Do you realize that is more than 20% of the American population? Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost in excess of $18 billion. Respiratory allergies (sinusitis, asthma) affect between 35-50 million people. There are three primary types of allergies: Seasonal (Type 1), Chemical (Type 2) and Food. The most common allergic diseases include: hay fever, asthma, conjunctivitis, hives, eczema, dermatitis and sinusitis.

In the past, the inappropriate immune system response to an allergy was associated with substances such as: cat hair, dust or wheat, and, seasonal conditions that produced pollen or spores. Today, the dramatic rise in allergies may also be attributed to environmental pollutants, asbestos and smoke exhaust fumes. Stress and adrenal exhaustion, enzyme imbalances and essential fatty acid deficiencies may be involved, as well. Allergic reactions can range from bothersome (drippy nose complaints, itching eyes) to life-threatening (anaphylaxis).

Avoidance to certain substances may aid in decreasing allergic symptoms, but it is generally believed that allergies themselves cannot be prevented. The objective for most is to attempt to control the symptoms of an allergy as much as possible. However, there are those, such as I, who believe allergies may be the result of a compromised immune system. Therefore, a strong, healthy immune system is essential in overcoming allergies and/or allergic responses.

Allergy-prone people produce an overabundance of complex proteins known as antibodies which trigger special cells known as mast cells. Mast cells release inflammation-causing chemicals called histamines and leukotrienes throughout the body. Many people have sought assistance for allergies/treatment of allergies through the medical model. Medical treatment for most allergies consists of antihistamines, steroids and desensitization shots. Others have found relief from allergies and subsequent symptomatic responses through the natural* approach. Natural* recommendations for improving immune system health may include diet, exercise and/or short-term supplementation (if necessary).
