Finding Hero's Everywhere

How easy is it to be a hero? Ever wondered if you have what it takes for someone to call you a hero? Well you do! It's already inside you!

We have this idealized image of a hero in our heads: a hero is the person who runs into a burning building to save some stranger at great risk to their own lives. A hero is the soldier who dies fighting for our country. A hero is the kid who saved a bag of puppies from drowning because he heard their cries and pulled them from the water.

Prescription for Loneliness

The headline read, "Senior Swimmers Summon Secret Strategy." Featured in the article was the "Iron Man," 71 year old Fred Rogers. Rogers won medals in the Senior Games swimming competition held at a local swim club.

The local chapter of the American Heart Association is looking for volunteers to serve on its board of directors. The board works to reduce death and disability due to strokes and cardiovascular disease

Death is not my next Goal

Aging is a phenomenon which introduces all kinds of subjects and issues we would rather leave alone. Many senior citizens (and others) are timid and reluctant to broach the subject of death, being ready for it, making necessary practical plans and decisions and even admitting to its very likelihood.

Death, however, will happen to each of us, whether we admit, like it, deal with it or not. Thus, the question, why the hesitance? Discussing death does not speed its coming, nor prevent its happening.

Fun Activities For Senior Citizens

Are you a senior citizen? Age doesn't prevent one from having their share of fun. Jazz up your life with some entertaining activities tailor-made for senior citizens.

A lot of emphasis is put on keeping ourselves fit and occupied while we are in our salad-days. But, we should spare a thought about our old-age as well. It is the stage in which we need maximum attention and it is the stage in which we can very well become a couch potato.

Wisdom thru Experience

I have heard many times, that wisdom comes from experience. As we journey through life, we encounter various situations. Some of these situations may baffle us. Of course, the first place to turn is to God and his word for answers. God provides us with support. We can find that support in Job 12:12, "Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?"

That support is the seniors in our church, community, and family. It can be the elderly couple sitting off to the side during worship service.

Nuggets of Gold

Hello,

In 2 Cor. 1:8, Paul writes, "we were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure."

And in 2 Cor. 12, he writes that he was given a "thorn in the flesh" to keep his pride in check. This thorn he described as a "messenger of Satan" sent " to torment him." He pleaded with God three times to take it away, but instead of taking it away God's reply was "my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Paul

Pet Therapy can be Great

Pet therapy is a popular method of mild therapy for seniors. The documented benefits of interaction with animals are physical, mental, and emotional. Animal therapy variations can differ depending upon the needs of the seniors. While ownership therapy, where a senior living at home has a pet in the house, is the most effective type, it is only an option for seniors in good health who are able to take care of the animal themselves. Kittens are excellent therapy animals.

Computers and Medical Alert Systems for Senior Citizens

For many people, a computer is a tool that allows folks to have a hobby either directly, for example, by getting information from the internet or indirectly, i.e. a person likes to cook and therefore visits the Food Channel on line for recipes. What about computing for seniors? What can a senior do with a computer and the internet?

First of all, who are senior citizens? Many people are confused by the term "senior". Very often we see advertisements saying, for example,

Aging With Grace

Christian, in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, comes upon a man in an iron cage. He seems very forlorn and depressed. So Christian asks about his condition and the man declares that he is not the man he used to be.

"What wast thou once?" asked Christian.

The man indicated he was once a bold professor of Christ. He thought himself prepared to enter the celestial city and experienced a joy that one day he would spend eternity with Christ.

Go 4 Life Fitness Effort for Seniors

Public-private effort led by National Institute of Health focuses on fitness for older adults - only 25% of senior citizens engage in regular physical activity

Being physically active is vital to maintaining health and independence as we age, and a new federal campaign for people 50 and older will help them to get active and keep going.

Introduced today by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Go4Life campaign encourages sedentary older adults to reap health
